Government Moving to the Cloud – Data-centric Approach to Security

With the Obama administration pushing government agencies towards the cloud, the first intiative being to pick three applications to move to the cloud, there are many concerned with security risks. Most of these applications contain sensitive data which would be detrimental if hacked. The author argues that a data-centric approach would allow for these agencies to avoid many of the security risks and suggests four points to remember:

1. Rely on cryptography to secure data in the cloud.

2. Determine who is responsible for protecting cloud data.

3. Take a proactive approach to key management.

4. Add another level of trustworthiness

Using Bioimpedance as an Authentication Method

Looking into the future computer scientists at Dartmouth College in our home state of New Hampshire have developed a new device to authenticate users. The device is similar to a wrist watch with electrodes which pass a weak electrical current through the wrist to determine the user’s bioimpedance. This includes your bones, muscle, fat, and blood vessels which create a unique bioelectrical signal. Read More

Passwords Are Weak and Attacks Are Strong

Gawker servers were recently attacked exposing 1.3 million users’ passwords. Was yours one of them? These servers supported multiple sites including LinkedIn, so if you maintained the same password for all sites, then those would be compromised as well. Dan Goodin, author of the article, goes on to report that password attacks have advanced more in the past five years than over the past few decades. He goes on to describe the potential cracking methods and includes a quote which should resonate with all, “You can look online and you can generally find passwords for just about everyone at some point. I’ve found my own username and passwords on several different sites. If you think every single website you have an account on is secure and has never been hacked, you’re a much more optimistic person than I am.” Read More

Microsoft Security Blog – BYOD Resource

This is an excellent resource for understanding the increasingly popular term, BYOD. This three part blog entry from the Microsoft Security Blog really covers the topic. However, the 3rd article has the most substance and finally touches on some of the murky parts of BYOD, e.g. a user loses their device that has both personal and company data – can it be remotely wiped by the business?  Unfortunately, the article steers clear of any definitive answers. Organizations Still Not Prepared After Watching Multiple Attacks in 2012

It is not shocking to hear that there have been a high number of data breaches in 2012. What is surprising is even with the imminent threat, many organizations are still not prepared. Attacks are becoming more intense and invasive. In the recent article on Boston.com it was found that a “third of those executives doubted their organizations could fend off future attacks, and 84 percent said their companies were vulnerable to “advanced persistent attacks” — highly aggressive assaults launched by major criminal organizations and foreign governments, such as the 2011 attack on the Bedford data security company RSA Security.” Read More

Hefty Fines Enforced for Data Security

Recently the news has been riddled with articles describing the heft fines that firms will be facing if they fail to meet data security standards. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has already issued 68 warnings this year to firms not protecting personal data correctly. This is up 2% from last year. The idea is that the ICO will be taking a more proactive approach. In these recessionary times is has been difficult for organizations to keep up with IT upgrades and implementations and therefore there are security holes in old legacy systems which allow for this data to be leaked.

Recent Hacks of Online Services – Is Multi-factor the Answer?

Recent hacks of major online sites such as Amazon, Google, Apple and Twitter accounts has left many concerned with the level of security online. Many see that there are huge targets around such services as iCloud, Google Apps, Amazon’s Cloud Drive, MS Windows Live and others. Stephen Cobb from ESET says, “People are being urged to trust their data to the Internet cloud, but then you find that the operational security is alarmingly lax.”

Currently only basic passwords and credentials are being asked for but the article goes on to argue that multi-factor solutions are starting to emerge as the solution. The one issue that is apparent however, is that while blocking hackers, you will also be blocking your legitimate users, decreasing usability. Read More
